This craft project came out of necessity since I have two keys on my key ring that look exactly alike. I went to the hardware store the other day to get new keys and when I looked down at my keychain I didn’t know which one belonged to which lock. So I browsed the collection of decorated keys that they had at the store. Most of them were sports related, and not my team, so that wasn’t going to work. There were a couple of Tweety Birds…sorry no. So I got the regular keys made of both, and drove straight to the craft store for supplies toย decorate my new keys with.
This project takes 20 minutes to do, then 3 or 4 hours of drying time for each side.
- Keys
- Nail Polish
- Confetti, sequins or glitter
- Mod Podge Dimensional Magic
- Pin
Make sure your key is clean before your start. I just wipe it with a little rubbing alcohol. Paint two or three coats of nail polish on the top of the key. Make sure that the polish doesn’t get on the actual key part, because that would be very bad, especially if you can’t get in to your house. Very bad indeed.
After the last coat of nail polish sprinkle on your confetti. You can use a pin to direct the confetti to where you want it to go, but not too much, since you want it to look random.
Oh so carefully apply the Dimensional Magic. ย It spreads quickly and you want it to stay on the top part of the key. Use the pin to pop any bubbles and to spread the Dimensional Magic. Let it dry for 3 hours. Once dry, flip your key over and repeat.
Oh and be super careful the first time you open the Dimensional Magic. I couldn’t get it to squeeze out, and I squeezed to hard and POP, all over the vaulted ceiling and the floor. I had to act fast to get the stuff cleaned up before it hardened. My suggestion…don’t do that!
This is such a great idea, I should do this to my house key, I can never find it in my bunch ๐

Great idea. Thank you for sharing your tips with us at #HomeMattersParty. We would love to have you again this week.
That’s such a clever idea. Much better than the splodge of nail varnish I’ve done in the past.
Good tip about opening the dimensional magic too – that’s potentially one of those ‘done in 5 seconds and regretted for ever’ type moments!
