It’s been a busy week around here. Baby arrived last week and our lives have revolved around cuddling and snuggling the newest family member. She is just the easiest baby and we are all so happy she’s ours. Needless to say, there hasn’t been too much time for getting creative the past few days. Yesterday, I started to feel the itch like I needed to make something, but it had to be a quick and easy project. So I painted a tea towel. I love taking plain flour sack towels and turning them into something pretty yet useful, like this watercolor dyed tea towel and falling shamrock tea towel. This particular towel took about 15 minutes to stamp with a carved wooden block stamp and fabric paint. We all have an extra 15 minutes to get creative, even with a newborn!

Heart Stamped Tea Towel
Supplies ~
- Flour sack towel (washed and dried without fabric softener)
- Red fabric paint (DecoArt SoSoft)
- Spray bottle filled with water
- Wooden block stamp
- Brayer
The wooden block stamp is from a brand called Blockwallah, who works with rural Indian artisans who create hand carved printing blocks. There are so many different designs available and I am in love with each and every block. Amazon has quite a selection available, here, and the Blockwallah website has even more. The stamp I used it called Heart of Hearts, which is perfect for Valentines Day!
Directions ~
Lay out your towel on a flat surface and lightly spray with water to straighten it out. Put some fabric paint on a palette or paper plate and spread it out with the brayer. Place wooden block in the paint and stamp on to the surface of the towel. I like to do a couple practice runs on scratch paper, just to see how much paint makes the best print. Keep stamping.
I just eyeballed the placement of each stamp, but if you are a perfectionist, then you can measure the distance if you want. But wooden block stamps may not be for you if you are a perfectionist, since each print turns out a little different. The stamp print looks different on wet fabric than it does on dry fabric. Both are great, but if you prefer the way it looks when stamped on the wet fabric, then keep the spray bottle handy and dampen the fabric as you go. There’s no wrong way with this craft!
Once finished, let the paint dry. Iron on hot to set the paint. Then you are free to use your tea towel!!
So simple and so cute!
This is a lovely idea for valentines 🙂
