felt poinsettia photo frames

I am so excited for tomorrow because we are going to get our holiday photos taken by Katie at Sweet Rose Studio. Okay, I’m excited and a little nervous. I’m afraid my crazy little Sparkletots will be running around like maniacs and all the pictures will have a blurred figure which may or may not resemble a toddler (or two). But Katie is awesome, so I’m sure they will turn out great.

In preparation for our awesome photos, I decorated a couple of photo frames with felt poinsettias to get that Christmas-y feel. Here’s how I did it..

Supplies:

  • felt (red, green and/or white)
  • needle and coordinating thread
  • scissors
  • hot glue gun
  • little rhinestones
  • picture frame (painted to your preferred color)
Paint or spray paint your frame to the desired color (I sprayed mine with my favorite Satin Nickel). While they are drying, get started on your poinsettias. Cut out shapes like the ones below. The largest of the shapes were about 2 inches tall, the smallest about an inch to an inch and a half.

When you have five of descending sizes, stack them like the image below, so that it resembles a flower.

Use your needle and thread and make a cross-stich through the center of all the petals. Pull the thread tight so that the petals pop up a bit, to give your flower volume. Secure the thread with a stitch on the back.

Stick a rhinestone in the middle of the flower. Once you have enough to go around the perimeter of your frame, start hot gluing them on. I found it best to put one in each corner, then working my way in from the edges, making sure the flowers line up on both sides.

That’s all there is to it! Easy and festive!
