It’s difficult to be a guest in someone else home over the holidays. Actually, it’s tough to be a houseguest anytime of the year, but the holidays can be particularly stressful. A good host will recognize this and make it as comfortable as possible. My home is your home, as the saying goes, but there are ways to make guests feel more at home and less like they are completely invading your space. Here are six tips that will help keep your guests and yourself happy and comfortable during their holiday visit.
Provide soft towels and a space for your guests to hang them.
I was once at a place where there were fancy, decorative towels on display and no “normal” towels anywhere to be seen. I was completely embarrassed to learn I had been using the wrong towels. Don’t do this to your guests. Leave clean and soft towels out and make it obvious that they are for your guest to use. This is particularly necessary if they are using a bathroom that is part of a shared space, like the main bathroom. Make sure there is a hook or a place for your guests to put their towels to dry.
Keep extra rolls of toilet paper in an obvious place.
There is little worse than being a guest at someone’s home and being stuck in the bathroom with an empty roll of toilet paper. Be sure to keep extra rolls in an obvious place, like right on top of the toilet or in a basket next to the toilet. Wrapping the rolls with ribbon makes it festive, but be sure to tell your guest that they are there to use if needed.
Make it smell good.
What’s just as bad as running out of toilet paper? Making an embarrassing stink in the bathroom when you are a guest at someone’s home. Save your guests from being that person by providing a candle and matches, or some room deodorizer to counter act any noxious bathroom smells.
Provide toiletries.
You never know what might be forgotten back at home and chances are your guest won’t want to inconvenience you to drive them to the store. Prepare for what they might need and have it available. Have your extra toiletries out and make them part of the decor. Color coordinate them if you can. I easily found lotions, toothpaste and other items in silver packaging. Stick some cotton swabs in a little dish. Loosely wrap a bar of soap in festive gift wrap. Put them in a basket with Christmas ornaments. Festive!
Make sure your guests have a designated space for their personal items.
If your guest brings a lot of toiletries and make-up, make sure you have a space for them to put their belongings so they are out of the way when they aren’t being used. My bathroom has a little cubby hole that is perfect for stashing a make-up bag or toiletry kit. If you can, provide an empty drawer or a shelf in a cabinet. Of course this is necessary for a main bathroom, but is nice for a private one only the guest use as well.
Tidy up the bathroom each day.
After everyone is finished using the bathroom in the morning, sneak in there and tidy it up. Wipe down the counters and the sink, clean any smudges off the mirror and quickly clean the toilet bowl. Replace any toilet paper rolls, tissues, soap or toiletries that have been used and replace any soiled towels. This will take all of five minutes and keep the bathroom fresh, clean and comfortable.
How gorgeous are these bathroom images from W2 by Wetstyle?! The time is coming for a bathroom remodel and I am seriously considering Wetstyle vanities, cabinets, washbasins and bathtubs because I love the simple design aesthetic and the ability the products have to make a big statement for such a small space. Plus the washbasins and bathtubs are made of Wetmar-BiO, which is a combination of soy and mineral stone, meaning they are eco-friendly. I definitely would love to soak in one of those bathtubs. I bet my houseguests would too!
